There are various questions we get asked a lot, so here are some answers to said questions, so we don’t have to ruddy repeat ourselves many times.
What’s the difference between parkour, free-running and tricking?
Whilst it doesn’t particularly matter what you call this stuff, there are fundamental differences between the three.
Parkour: The aim of parkour is to move from one point to another as efficiently and quickly as possible, using predominantly the abilities of the human body to overcome obstacles, which could be anything in the surrounding environment — from branches and rocks to rails and concrete walls. People who practise this are known as traceurs.
Tricking: Tricking is similar to the acrobatic aspect of gymnastics, involving many flips, tricks and kicks, except it is often practised outside in a similar environment to parkour, rather than being confined to a gym. The emphasis is on style as opposed to the efficiency of parkour.
Free-running: Free-running is similar to parkour with many of its movements, however it is much more for aesthetic purposes so therefore involves some tricking movements as well. These incorporated tricking movements are generally quite fluent and mixed in with parkour movements.
These words mostly just aid communication (i.e. explaining what you do) and many people do a combination of the three. ‘Parkour’ and ‘Free-running’ are often used as a words to describe them as a whole.
Where can I learn?
At the moment there are no special places to begin your parkour journey in Huddersfield, but if you come along on a Saturday there will always be someone to give you a hand. Don’t be afraid to ask for advice and join in as much as you can and you will soon pick it up.
In the near future we will be running regular classes for beginners in an indoor gymnastics club. This will provide a chance to learn alongside people who are at a similar level and in a more controlled environment. So keep your eyes peeled for news of this.
What should I wear to train in?
Generally it helps to wear loose clothing, nothing special, just light joggers and then something comfortable on top. Avoid clothing like jeans which may restrict movement. Get some suitable trainers with good grip, decent cushioning and durability. Generally running shoes are favoured and you don’t have to break the bank to get some. Kalenjis are available from just £10 and are very popular amongst practitioners.
Can I join the group?
We must stress that doing parkour is not about being part of a group or ‘team’. It is about your own self-improvement. However it is unquestionably beneficial to practise with others around you who have the same aim. There is no ‘elite’ group or anything, we are just a bunch of friends who do what we love to do, together. EVERYONE IS WELCOME to come and train and have fun and improve. HFR is not a specific group, it is more a community, meaning that if you do free-running/parkour/whatever in Huddersfield, you are part of this community.
Do you have regular training sessions?
We no longer meet regularly on Saturdays, so it has become a bit harder to just turn up and give it a try. However you might be able to arrange something on the facebook page, or by contacting us.
